Malin Kundang the Perfidious Son

Malin Kundang is folklore that originated from Padang, West Sumatra, one of the islands located in the State of Indonesia. 

Once upon a time in West Sumatra Padang precisely in Air Manis Beach Village is a widow named Mande Rubayah. She just had a son named Malin Kundang. Mande Rubayah very fond of Malin, because since childhood Malin left by his father's death. 

Malin and his mother lived in a fishing village. Her mother is old and he only worked as a cake seller. On a day, Malin fell ill; his body suddenly gets very hot. Mande Rubayah the mother must be very confused, Malin never get sick like this before. Mande Rubayah also tries very hard to treat Malin until she brings the physician. Malin's life that almost floated it can finally be saved thanks to the efforts of the mother. After recovering from his illness, Malin more loved. Thus, Mande Rubayah loved her son. Conversely, Malin was very fond of his mother. 

One day a big ship docked at Air Manis Beach. Malin immediately ran to his mother "mom ... Malin want to go wander," Malin said to his mother. Mande was surprised to hear a statement from her beloved son who was so sudden. Malin went on his words "This is the best opportunity to Malin, Mom!, not necessarily once a year there is a big ship docked at this beach. Malin promised to change the fate of us so that we can become rich, i promise that i will often send  letters to you, Mom ". 

Seeing his so fiery, Mande Rubayah unable to resist. Even with heavy hearts, Mande Rubayah finally allows her son to go. Mande also equip her children with rice wrapped in banana leaves as many as seven packs. With tears, Mande took off her son's departure "careful on the road son, mother's prayers will always be with you" shouted the mother waving her hand, looked at her son, slowly disappeared along the big ship. 

With its strong intention to change his fate, in the ship Malin learn a lot about science cruise on the more experienced crew. He studied diligently about the sea, how to read the wind, repair ships up to steer the big ship.

As for the mother, the days went by feel heavy and slow for Mande Rubayah. Every morning and afternoon Mande Rubayah watching the ocean. Wondered to herself, to where her son now? If there are big waves and storm from the beach, her chest began to pound. She raised her hands upward to pray for her son survived from the voyage. If there are boats that came close, she always asks news of her son. However, all the crew or the captain was never given a satisfactory answer. Malin never entrust the goods or any message to his mother. 

On a day Mande Rubayah hear from the master who first brought Malin, that Malin now has been married to a beautiful girl daughter of a wealthy nobleman. She was so happy to hear the news. She always prayed that her son survived and come back soon to visit him. "Malin, Mom began older, when you come home ... mother greatly missed you Malin" groaned the mother every night. Apparently, God is the Compassionate, the Merciful, moaned of the mother have been heard. 

On a clear day from a distance looks a beautiful ship that sailed to the coast. The ship was magnificent and stratified. Villagers thought the ship belonged to a sultan or a prince. They greeted him with joy. When the ship began to move up, it seems a young couple standing on the bridge. Their clothes were sparkling in the sun. Decorate their faces bright smile. They seem happy with a rousing welcome. Mande Rubayah come crammed saw and approached the ship. Her heart was pounding so hard. She is very confident that the young man is her lovely child - the Malin Kundang. 

Before the village chief was welcomed, the mother first went to Malin. She immediately hugged Malin tightly, as though afraid of losing her son again. "Malin, my son", she said, holding sobbing for joy. "Why so long you do not give the news?" Malin was stunned because the elderly woman who embraced the tattered dress. He does not believe that she is his mother. Malin recall, his mother was a strong woman who carried her body anywhere.

Before Malin had time to think calmly, his beautiful wife spat, saying "Cuih! This ugly woman is your mother?, Why did you lie to me? ", Then she spit again" Did you say your mother was a nobleman equal with us? ", Hear the words of his wife; Malin Kundang pushed her to tumble into the sand. Mande Rubayah almost did not believe with the treatment of her son; he sat down and said, "Malin, Malin, my son. I am your mother's son! ". Malin Kundang ignored his mother's words. His mind was distracted by his wife's speech. If the woman is his mother, he will not admit it. He is ashamed of his wife. Seeing the woman crawling about to hug his legs, Malin kicked him, saying "Hey, old lady! My mom does not like you! Destitute and filthy! ". 

Mande Rubayah lying in the sand. This incident makes all residents stunned and finally back to come home each, unexpectedly Malin who is always loved by his mom, dare to do so on her own mother. Kick was never that hurt compared with treatment of her own son Malin, Mande Rubayah become unconscious and lying alone. When she realized, Air Manis Beach was deserted. Mande saw the ship at sea is far and further away. Her heart was sore as in prick-puncture. She also cried and raises her hands to the sky "Oh, God Almighty, if he is not my son, I will forgive his actions earlier. However, if indeed he was my son, Malin Kundang, I beg thy justice, my God! ". 

Not long after, the weather in the middle of the sea that had been sunny, suddenly turned into dark. The rain suddenly fell with very thick. Somehow initially suddenly there came a great storm hit the ship of Malin Kundang, followed by a thunderous bolt of lightning. Immediately the ship was blown to pieces, then the waves crashing down to the beach. 

When the morning sun emits light, the storm has subsided. At the foot of the hill looks pieces of ships that have been turned to stone, that the vessel of Malin Kundang. Not far from where it appears, there is a rock that resembles a human body, it is said that the body of Malin Kundang rebellious child who has been cursed by his mother into stone. On the sidelines of the stone swimming fish, mullet, and mackerel fish, it is said that fish originating from the pieces of the body of the wife who continues to search for Malin Kundang. 

Thus, until now, if there are big waves hit the rocks are similar to human vessel and that, heard what sounded like a man howling screams. It sounded piteous. Sometimes sounded like a man lamenting sorry for hisself, "Forgiveee meee, Mooom ...! Forgive meee, Moomm ...!", that's supposedly the voice of the Malin Kundang.

 Note: 

It's one of my favorite stories when I was a kid, whether the story is real, or just a mere fairy tale ...! But the stone that resemble the human body which had prostrate really exists on the islands of West Sumatra who is now a recreation center, whether it's a coincidence or is it a fate of the prodigal son against the parents.
